FAQs
A few answers about macBG, the app, and what it can do today.
What is macBG?
macBG is a native macOS studio for making expressive wallpapers and visual assets. Build a gradient, pixelize an image, add motion or material, then apply it to your desktop from the menu bar.
Is macBG a native Mac app?
Yes. macBG is built for macOS with native window, menu bar, export, and screen-saver flows. It is designed to feel like a small Mac utility rather than a website wrapped in a window.
Can I use my own images?
Yes. Import one image or a set of images from Finder, crop them, and choose a pixel or mosaic treatment. Image pixelization happens locally on your Mac.
What can I export?
You can export PNG or SVG artwork at 1080p, 4K, or 6K for desktops, decks, sites, and product work.
Can the wallpapers be animated?
Gradient-based wallpapers can animate through properties like angle, reach, grain, warp, and color shift. Imported images stay still in the normal image workflow, while the material shader can use an image as its source.
What does the notch part mean?
macBG can preview and place the visual surface at the top, left, right, or bottom of your display. The same controls also work as a full desktop wallpaper.
Can I save designs and come back to them?
Yes. macBG keeps a local recipe history with favorites and import/export support for .macbg recipes. You can also pin parameters before shuffling the rest into a new variation.
Does macBG include a screen saver?
The project includes a macBG screen-saver target that can rotate saved artwork, show favorites only, and play saved animations. Its setup is available from the app's menu bar controls.
